1st International Conference: The Role of State in Varieties of Capitalism (SVOC)
Achievements and challenges for Central and Eastern Europe and the emerging markets

On behalf of the Organising Committee, the Institute of World Economics of
the Centre for Economic and Regional Studies, Hungarian Academy of Sciences
and Center for EU Enlargement Studies, Central European University we
invite you to join us in beautiful Budapest, for the 1st International Conference
entitled THE ROLE OF STATE IN VARIETIES OF CAPITALISM.

The primary intention of the conference is to document the extent and reach of
state capitalism around the world and explore its economic implications giving a
special focus to the Central and Eastern European region and the emerging
markets. The Conference aims particularly at exploring new concepts of
understanding the role of state within the framework of Varieties of Capitalism.
Our keynote speakers will be:
§ Leading researcher on Varieties of Capitalism in Emerging Markets,
Professor Andreas Nölke (Goethe University Frankfurt/Main)
§ Leading economist on Economic transformation in East-Central Europe,
Professor Martin Myant (European Trade Union Institute), Senior
Researcher and Head of Unit European Economic, Employment and Social
Policy
The state as economic agent, regulator, developer has gained increasing
attention during the last decade. The process was further accelerated during the
financial and economic crisis of 2007-9. Reforms of the welfare state, direct state
intervention in the form of nationalizations and other methods of crisis
management, active structural policies have been some of the areas of
increasing state activity. The aim of the conference is to gather information on
the nature, scope and field of this activity: how state intervention may influence
capitalist models. Papers are invited from scholars of economics, political science
and related disciplines.

Our Conference welcomes high quality contributions proposing advances in the
field of theory, empirics or policy.

Contributions to SVOC2015 should be related to the general theme of the
conference “The Role of State in Varieties of Capitalism” with the aim of
(1)understanding state ownership
a. privatization and state asset management,
b. changes in long-term state ownership patterns (mixed ownership),
c. crisis management and the bailing out of financial institutions and other
firms,
(2)analysing institutional settings of capitalist models and different policy
set-ups
a. comparisons of institutions and policies among the different capitalist
models of Europe,
b. forms of hybrid capitalism in emerging markets,
c. industrial policy,
d. active structural policies and supporting institutions,
e. employment and job creation,
f. welfare system reforms
g. corruption and state capture
h. innovation, education and R&D in different capitalist models
(3)examining the emergence of the new developmental state:
a. tasks of the new developmental state
b. the role of development institutions and banks in supporting structural
change and innovation;

The conference agenda is organized around country groups that face similar
macroeconomic and institutional problems and tasks, in order to provide an
opportunity for panelists to exchange ideas on a comparative basis.

Submission of abstracts: Submit a 500 words abstract
to svoc.conf@krtk.mta.hu (use the provided template)
The abstract should clearly mention:
1. title of the paper
2. name of the author(s) and full address of the corresponding author (postal
address, phone, fax and email)
3. submission to one of the special tracks of the conference
4. aim of the study and methodology
5. (expected) results and/or conclusion

the Centre for Economic and Regional Studies, Hungarian Academy of Sciences
and Center for EU Enlargement Studies, Central European University.

§ Registration fees: 100 euros
§ Early bird (if paid before September 30, 2015): 80 euros
§ Reduced registration fees (for PhD students if paid before September 30,
2015): 40 euros
§ Reduced registration fees (for PhD students if paid after September 30,
2015): 50 euros
