Are you tired of hearing people talk about "big data"? Do you have
that nagging feeling that "big data" means ... hmmm, what exactly
anyway? Are you willing to confess that your datasets aren't that big
after all? Are you wondering if there are other challenges in data
analysis rather than handling a zettabyte-sized file across 10,000
machines? Great! Then you might be the right person to work on
"small data".
What the heck is "small data"? See this video

About the Group
Our research focuses on database indexing, data layouts, and
main-memory databases. We also run a site with educational database
videos. See http://youtube.com/jensdit or http://datenbankenlernen.de
for a list of freely available videos (and slides) on database
technology in German and English (about 80 videos in German on
ER/relational algebra/SQL and 80 videos in English on database
implementation techniques so far). We use these videos for flipped
classrooms. A textbook accompanying the English videos is scheduled to
appear in summer 2015.
About the Department
The CS department at Saarland University is consistently ranked among
the top places in evaluations such as the CHE-ranking. Our CS programs
are very international: all courses starting from the third BSc year
are taught in English. We also have a CS graduate school supported by
DFG.
