00:37 Denmark : PhD Project in Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Oil Reservoirs | |
DTU compute would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting September 1st 2015. The PhD position is in the framework of the project Optimizing Oil Production by Novel Technology Integration - OPTION, supported by the Danish National Foundation for Advanced Technologies. The PhD project will be carried out in collaboration with DTU, Lloyd ´s Register Consulting, and Welltec A/S. The PhD student will be based at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. The project is fully financed by The Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation and DTU. Description of the broader project Horizontal oil wells have already dramatically improved the productivity and reduced the cost of oil and gas fields. The objective of this project is to bring the technology to the next level by providing tools for predicting and performing optimal control of the flow between the wells and the oil reservoir. To reach the production optimum from the long horizontal wells, each segment has to be controlled to ensure uniform depletion and prevent loss of reserves by premature water or gas breakthrough. To achieve this goal, this project aims at realizing the integration of the four different models: reservoir modelling, reservoir simulation, well flow control, and numerical optimization methods. Description of the PhD position Integration of reservoir, well, and facilities operation is needed in reservoir management for the overall optimization of the production. This project will research numerical methods for optimal control and Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) to develop Closed-Loop Reservoir Management (CLRM) software that can potentially be used for improving the oil recovery from oil reservoirs by water flooding. The PhD student will integrate results from three other work packages and adds the control and optimization. Requirements Candidates must have a master degree in physics, mathematical modelling and computing, computational science and engineering, computational geoscience or equivalent academic qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates who can document skills in Nonlinear Model Predictive Control, numerical optimization algorithms, and knowledge of C/C++. In addition knowledge of adjoint methods for gradient computation and knowledge of ESDIRK methods for numerical integration will be considered an advantage. Results, when appropriate, are to be implemented into modules of an in-house COSI framework used by the industry for advanced reservoir simulations. The candidate is expected to join activities within the Centre of Energy Resources (CERE) at DTU. A good command of the English language is essential. Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the ITMAN Graduate School Programme of DTU Compute. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide. Assesment The assessment of the applicants will be made by: Associate Professor John B. Jørgensen (E-mail: jbjo@dtu.dk) and Postdoc Andrea Capolei (E-mail: acap@dtu.dk).
