Norway : PhD Research fellowship in Religious and Moral Education

A position as research fellow is vacant at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research in the subject area Religious and Moral Education (In Norwegian: "religion og etikk fagdidaktikk").

Religious and moral education is a complex research area that comprises knowledge from several subjects (religion, theology, philosophy, and ethics) in addition to perspectives from educational and social science. In the Norwegian state run school system, religious and moral education is taught in two compulsory, secular, pluralistic subjects, one named Religion, Philosophies of Life and Ethics (RLE) at the lower secondary level, and another named Religion and Ethics (RE) at the upper secondary level. This is the context in which a research fellow is to investigate educational issues relevant for the teaching and learning in religious and moral education.

How the RLE and RE subjects may strengthen pupils' reflection and coexistence in an increasingly multicultural and globalized society is one of the main challenges of the RLE/RE subjects. To increase knowledge about teaching and learning related to these issues the department is therefore particularly interested in research proposals that include a student perspective.

The Department of Teacher Education and School Research organizes four research groups:

Curriculum Studies, Leadership and Educational Governance (CLEG)
Measurement and Evaluation of Student Achievement (MESA)
Studies of Instruction across Subjects and Competences (SISCO)
Teacher Professionalism and Educational Change: Practices, Purposes, Policies (TEPEC)
It is expected that the applicant is affiliated with one of these groups.

Positions as research fellows are fixed-term educational posts where the aim is that the research fellow is to complete a doctoral degree (PhD) during the period of employment. A prerequisite for employment is admission to the Faculty's doctoral degree programme, and applicants' formal and other qualifications for admission will therefore also be assessed. The doctoral candidate is expected to participate actively in the organized research training and in the Faculty's research community.

The appointment is made for a period of up to four years (25 % of which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching activities).

The appointment can have a more limited scope on account of any previous employment in academic positions.

For further information, we refer to Guidelines concerning appointment to post-doctoral and research posts at the University of Oslo.
