CALL FOR PAPERS

The first conference on the theme of light – Toronto / Montreal /
Lille: Lumières des Lumière – was held at Le Fresnoy – Studio national
des arts contemporains (Lille, France) in February 2011. The second
conference – Toronto / Montreal / Lille: Lumières de la ville – was
held at the Université du Québec à Montréal in February 2013. The third
and last conference of this cycle – Toronto / Montreal / Lille: The
Inventions of Light / Les inventions de la lumière – will be a
bilingual event to be held at Ryerson University (Toronto, Canada) in
February 2016.

We welcome paper proposals from academics and graduate students, as
well as abstracts from artists whose work is at the crossroads of
research and creation in the field of photography, film, and media arts.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

Light & Reason: The World Illuminated
A discussion of light and seeing, and the interrelationships among
light, phenomena of the visible world, and philosophical thinking about
visible experience.

Light & Imagination: Metaphors and Visions
A discussion of artists using light in a metaphorical sense, this
session will move from the realm of the visible to that of the imagined
and the metaphorical. Just as light illuminates the world, it also
illuminates the imagination.

Light & Imagination: Projection and Darkness
A discussion of light as projected into/onto darkness, and darkness as
a quality in itself, exploring both expressive and metaphorical
aspects, this discussion may include visual artists concerned with the
lower range of the tone scale: the range of the twilit, the tenebrous,
the shadowed, the threatened or the obscured.

Visible / Invisible
A discussion of how technology has expanded the realm of the visible in
both arts and sciences. This includes X-ray and infrared technologies
as well as high-speed imaging and remote surveillance.

Flash, Lightning, Explosion
A discussion of the use of all types of flash in photography and film,
both historical and contemporary. This session will explore the
invention and development of flash technology, and the expressive uses
of flash devices in both documentary practice and other realms of
image-making.

Nuclear Light: Revelation and Apocalypse
A discussion of the unique qualities of nuclear light, as documented by
a generation of filmmakers, photographers, and media artists. This will
be followed by a presentation of imagery of the post-nuclear world,
both illuminated and in darkness.

The conference proceedings of the first two symposia have been
published by Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains and
are in press with Presses de l’Université du Québec. The organizers
anticipate that the bilingual conference proceedings will be published,
too.

working title of paper, 100-word bio, and 300-word abstract) to

Appel à communications

Le premier colloque sur le thème de la lumière –Toronto / Montréal /
Lille: Lumières des Lumière – a eu lieu au Fresnoy – Studio national
des arts contemporains (Lille, France) en février 2011. Le second
colloque – Toronto / Montréal / Lille: Lumières de la ville – s’est
tenu à l’Université du Québec à Montréal en février 2013. Le troisième
et dernier colloque de ce cycle – Toronto / Montréal / Lille: Les
inventions de la lumière / The Inventions of Light – pour la première
fois bilingue, se tiendra à Ryerson University (Toronto, Canada) en
février 2016.

Le comité organisateur et scientifique souhaite recevoir des
propositions de communication de la part de chercheurs établis,
d’étudiants gradués, ainsi que d’artistes dont les œuvres se trouvent
au carrefour de la recherche et de la création dans le domaine de la
photographie, du cinéma et des arts médiatiques.

Les thèmes du colloque s’articuleront autour des pistes de réflexions
suivantes :

Lumière et raison : le monde illuminé
Une discussion de la lumière et de la vision qui met l’accent sur les
interrelations entre la lumière, les phénomènes du monde visible et la
pensée philosophique sur l’expérience visuelle.

Lumière et imagination : métaphores et visions
Une discussion de travaux artistiques utilisant la lumière de façon
métaphorique, que ce soit pour révéler ou imaginer, ce panel passera du
domaine du visible aux domaines de ce qui est imaginé et de la
métaphore. Tout comme la lumière illumine le monde, elle illumine
également l’imagination.

Lumière et imagination : la projection et la noirceur
Une discussion de la lumière projetée dans le noir, et de la noirceur
comme attribut unique, qui explore les aspects autant expressifs que
métaphoriques.

Visible / invisible
Comment les technologies ont-elles étendu le domaine du visible dans
les arts et les sciences ? On pourra s’attarder sur les rayons X,
l’infrarouge, l’imagerie haute vitesse ou les technologies de
surveillance.

Flash, éclair, explosion
Une discussion de l’utilisation de tous les types de flash dans la
photographie ou le cinéma, que ce soit à l’époque moderne ou
contemporaine, ce panel explorera l’invention et le développement de la
technologie du flash et son utilisation dans les pratiques
documentaires et d’autres lieux de création d’images.

Lumière nucléaire : révélation et apocalypse
Une discussion des propriétés uniques de la lumière nucléaire dans
l’œuvre de photographes, cinéastes ou artistes médiatiques, ce panel
sera suivi de la présentation d’images du monde post-nucléaire.

Les actes des deux colloques précédents ont été publiés par Le Fresnoy
– Studio national des arts contemporains et les Presses de l’Université
du Québec. Le comité de sélection prévoit la publication des actes du
troisième colloque dans une publication bilingue.

Les propositions de communication comporteront un titre, un résumé
(max. 300 mots), l’affiliation universitaire ainsi qu’une courte
biographie (max. 100 mots). Elles devront nous parvenir par courrier
