PhD scholarship in Design Approaches for Terahertz electronics using Active Device Configurations , Denmark

The Department of Electrical Engineering invites applicants for a 3-year PhD position as part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network Programme on Convergence of Electronics and Photonics Technologies for Enabling Terahertz Applications – “CELTA”. The aim of the “CELTA” project is to provide doctoral students with a wide range of skills in both electronics and photonics, necessary to meet future demands for Terahertz systems.

The “CELTA” project consortium consists of 11 partner universities and a high number of associated research institutes and companies.

Responsibilities and tasks
The purpose of the PhD project is to address the challenges related to the signal generation in the 0.1-1 THz frequency range by using innovative transistor-based active circuit approaches. The study should investigate circuit techniques to exhaust the potential for operation near or above the frequency limit (fT and fmax) set by current InP HBT technologies. These circuit techniques must be based on the non-linear characteristics of the InP HBTs and exploit advanced concepts such as Gm-boosting, neutralization, stacking, etc.

The expected outcome of the PhD project will be chip-sets demonstrating highly efficient frequency multiplier chains allowing to extent the frequency range for transistor-based sources sub-harmonically pumped up-conversion mixers for efficient generation of odd harmonics.

The candidate must participate in CELTA training events and should be willing to participate in long term research exchanges to an CELTA associated research institute.

Qualifications

MSc in electrical engineering or equivalent qualification
Experience in RF and microwave circuit design
Knowledge of integrated circuit (IC) techniques
Basic knowledge of specific simulations software (ADS, HFSS, Cadence etc)
Excellent command of English (written and spoken) as well as technical writing
Approval and Enrolment
PhD scholarships are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general PhD programmes at DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarships, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Please note that due to the Marie Sklodowska-Curie mobility requirements, residents as well as persons who have resided more than 12 months during the last 3 years in Denmark cannot apply for this position. Furthermore, the applicants must have neither a PhD nor research experience ≤ 4 years.

Assessment
The assessment will be made by Associate Professor Tom K. Johansen.
