The University of Bergen (UiB) is an internationally recognised research university with more than 14,000 students and close to 3,500 employees at six faculties. The university is located in the heart of Bergen. Our main contribution to society is excellent basic research and education across a wide range of disciplines. Associate Professor in Data Science There is a vacancy for a permanent associate professor position at the Department of information science and media studies within data science. The Department of information science and media studies was established in 2004 by merging the former Department of information science and Department of media studies. The staff counts about 70 people, including 30 permanent faculty members and approximately 20 PhD and postdoc positions. The department offers separate bachelor- and master-programs in both information science and media. There are also bachelor programs in Film and TV-production, Journalism and New Media. Furthermore, the department co-hosts interdisciplinary programs for ICT, Cognitive Science and Rhetoric. The department is partner in Media City Bergen. This media-cluster opens in 2017 and will facilitate research and education in the practices of media and media-technology. For instance, there will be a new program in interaction design for digital media. The research profile of the department is characterized by a strong focus on the traditions of both disciplines as well as its interdisciplinary nature. Within information science there are research-groups on interaction-research, semantic and social information-systems and logic, information and interaction. Work tasks/research field: The position includes responsibility for teaching core topics in information science, such as programming, data management, information-systems, semantic technologies, artificial intelligence, the social web and interaction design. Research shall be conducted within the field of data science with an aim to develop research on big data in cooperation with the present faculty Qualifications and personal qualities: The applicant must have a doctoral degree in the relevant field or equivalent qualifications. Experience from system development and programming Ability to publish research results in data science beyond doctorate at a high international level. In assessing the scientific work research from the five latest years will be emphasized Teach information science both at undergraduate and graduate level Work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others. Basic pedagogical training is a requirement for the position. The successful applicant will be offered training if this requirement is not met prior to employment. The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant will be required to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years of being appointed. We can offer: A good and professionally challenging working environment Salary at pay grade 60 - 68 (code 1011/ Pay range 24.4) in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 510 100,- NOK 591 4000,- before taxes. Further increase in salary will depend on seniority. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.
