Application of novel bioactives against commonly isolated wound pathogens

Project Description This research is a microbiology based project looking at the potential for novel bioactives to inhibit bacteria of clinical relevance. The projected will be jointly hosted by the Infection and Immunity group within Cardiff Metropolitan University department of Biosciences and NEEM Biotech Ltd, Abertillery. The PhD aims to elucidate the mechanism of action, physiological and molecular, by which aspecific antimicrobial compound elicit its effects against pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin Resistant S. aureus. The increase in antibiotic resistance seen in bacteria globally is a growing problem, which has been exacerbated by the lack of new antimicrobial compounds in the development pipeline. The failure to develop effective alternatives to existing antibiotics will have a significant impact on global health, with a predicted 10 million deaths per year caused by antibiotic resistant infection by 2050. As such there has been a drive for the discovery of alternative agents or the repurposing of known compounds. This research will focus on elucidating the antibacterial activity and mechanism of action of a natural compound against antibiotic resistant bacteria commonly associated with infection. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing, detection of synergy, microscopy, as well as proteomic and genomic methodology will be utilised to gather information pertaining to the viability of the compound as a functional antimicrobial agent. Applicants must have a good first degree in microbiology or closely related area. The project will involve the testing of compounds against bacteria so the candidate should be familiar with standard antimicrobial susceptibility testing techniques and biofilm susceptibility testing models. Ideally candidates will have familiarity with proteomics and genomics would be desirable. As the project will be split between the University and NEEM Biotech Ltd, it is also desirable that the candidate has a driving licence. It is essential that the candidate display a good level of both verbal and written communication skills. This three year PhD will commence in January 2017, although an earlier start date could be considered. The scholarship holder will receive a stipend (c£14,000pa) and will have access to a fixed budget to cover equipment and consumables and travel. Tuition fees will be waived for the three years of the project. KESS scholars will have access to a suite of higher level skills training and attendance at a residential KESS Grad School. Funding Notes This scholarship is part of the second phase of the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship (KESS II) programme which is part funded from the ESF Convergence Programme.
