The 3rd ACM SIGSPATIAL PhD Symposium October 31, 2016 San Francisco, CA https://sites.google.com/site/ sigspatialphd16/ In conjunction with the 24th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems (ACM SIGSPATIAL 2016) October 31 - November 3, 2016 http://sigspatial2016. sigspatial.org/ Call for Submissions The ACM SIGSPATIAL 2016 PhD Symposium provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests in the broad areas addressed by the ACM SIGSPATIAL community. We invite PhD students to submit a summary of their dissertation work to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. We have two tracks for submission. The Junior PhD Track is for students who are in early stages of their doctoral studies. The submission should provide a clear problem definition, explain why it is important, survey related work, and summarize the new solutions that are pursued. The Senior PhD Track is for students who are close to completion (expected to graduate by 2016/2017). The submission should focus on describing the contribution they made in their doctoral dissertation. The strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along that they can no longer make changes. Submission Submissions must be single-author, and the name of the supervisor must be marked ("supervised by") on the paper, under the author's name. Authors should not have received their Ph.D. degree nor submitted their thesis before the Symposium. Authors should submit their papers to the following website: https://easychair.org/ conferences/?conf= sigspatialphd16 The paper should be of maximum 4 pages and should follow the same formatting guidelines as ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS papers. Please make sure to meet these guidelines. Important Dates Paper Submission: August 23, 2016August 30, 2016 Notification of Acceptance: September 13, 2016 Camera-Ready Copy: September 27, 2016 Workshop: October 31, 2016 Scope The scope includes but is not limited to the following topics: Spatio-temporal query modeling, execution and optimization Spatio-temporal context-aware computing Spatio-temporal participatory sensing Spatio-temporal remote sensing Spatio-temporal Data Visualization Spatio-temporal data mining Intelligent transportation systems Indoor navigation systems Logistics management systems Geospatial crowdsourcing Mobile social networks Mobile localization Mobile surveillance Geographic information retrieval Privacy for GIS Augmented reality for GIS Location privacy and security for GIS Cloud computing for GIS High performance computing for GIS Mobility management for GIS Smartphone applications for GIS Distributed and parallel processing for GIS Middleware support for mobile GIS Pervasive computing for GIS Streaming data management for GIS Review Process The review process will balance many factors, including the quality of your proposal and where you are within your doctoral education program. It also includes external factors, where as a group the accepted candidates exhibit a diversity of backgrounds and topics. Candidates who have a clearly developed idea and who are formally considered by their institution to be working on their dissertation will receive the strongest consideration. Confidentiality of submissions is maintained during the review process. Upon acceptance, authors will receive the information about camera-ready instructions, attending the PhD Symposium, preparing their presentation, and how to register for the conference. At the Conference All participants are required to register to the workshop and present their work at the symposium. Each student will present his or her work to the group with substantial time allowed for discussion and questions by participating researchers and other students. Being accepted into the symposium is an honor, and involves a commitment to giving and receiving thoughtful commentary with an eye towards shaping the field and upcoming participants in the field. Faculty advisors of the students are strongly encouraged to attend the Symposium as well.
