International Symposium on Balkan History and Culture, October 6-8, 2016, Çanakkale

Call for Papers

Dear scholars, As the Union of Thracian Universities, we will be honored to host you in the International Symposium on Balkan History and Culture. The symposium will be hosted by the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and it will be organized at Çanakkale in October 6-8, 2016.

The Balkans have played and still play a significant role in the history, economy, culture, politics and social life of Turkey; and vice versa. The Ottoman period has a deep impact in the shaping of the modern Balkans. Significant changes happened in the ethnic, demographic, religious, political, economic and social structures of the Balkans during the Ottoman rule. Likewise, the Balkan experience should not be ignored in order to understand modern Turkish identity. However, romantic and nationalist approaches both in Turkey and in the Balkans have prevented the accurate evaluation of this historical legacy for a long time. Mutual prejudices and stereotypes still exist especially in popular publications and course books. The Union of Thracian Universities aims at the strengthening of historical and cultural ties and the development of mutual academic relations between Turkey and the Balkan countries. For this reason, it is aimed to bring together native and foreign scholars in the international symposium with the theme of Turks and the Balkans: History and Culture. Thus, while findings acquired in new studies will be presented to the scientific world, basic problems and inadequacies of Balkan studies in Turkey and Ottoman and Turkish studies in the Balkans will be debated and the steps that are necessary to be taken in this regard will be discussed. The languages of the symposium are Turkish and English. Abstracts of the papers should be prepared in both languages, not exceeding 200 words. The deadline for application and abstract submission to the symposium is September 2, 2016. Papers that will be presented at the symposium will be printed as a book until December 31, 2016and they will also become accessible in the internet as an e-book.
