The Nuffield College Centre for Experimental Social Sciences (CESS) seeks to appoint a Research Officer and Assistant to the Director. The post would be ideal for a candidate who has recently completed, or is close to completing, his or her doctorate in a relevant social and/or computing science discipline and who would be interested in contributing to the development and promotion of experimental social sciences in Oxford and beyond. The main duties of the Research Officer and Assistant to the Director include: managing all aspects of the online and virtual lab experiments, including scheduling, assisting with the design of the experimental projects and managing the associated administrative tasks; providing research assistance to the Director of CESS, including managing large databases and programming in R, Stata, and in languages designed to acquire web content in machine-readable format (for example, Python) and related web sweeping and text analysis software; and assisting the Director with the CESS administration. In addition the Research Officer will be expected to engage in independent scholarly research and to take part in the intellectual life of the Nuffield CESS and the College. Applicants should hold a bachelors and/or masters degree in a relevant Social Science discipline (e.g. Economics, Political Science, Sociology) or Computing Science or Statistics, and they must have completed or be close to completing a doctorate in one of these disciplines. They should also have familiarity with programming on-line survey and virtual lab experiments and with software designed for recruiting and managing the subject pool, and they should be able to manage the cloud servers that run the virtual and on-line experiments. They should have experience with managing large databases and using statistical analysis software (such as R and Stata) and web programming and scripting languages, such as PHP, Ruby on Rails, and Python and related web sweeping and text analysis software. The successful candidate should also have the ability and willingness to undertake independent scholarly research and to deliver courses, including courses associated with the CESS Summer Schools and training courses that CESS provides for both students and external clients (such as civil servants); and excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills. The salary offered is £34,389 p.a. - £35,951 p.a. (Research Officer Scale). The post is full-time and permanent, with an initial probationary period of twelve months. The starting date is 1 October 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post-holder will be based in the Nuffield CESS in Oxford.
