The Second Conference of European Association for Asian Art and Archaeology
University of Zurich, Switzerland, August 24-27, 2017

Terms and Conditions: Words that Realise Art and its Histories

Papers in this panel take, as a starting point, art historical terms
which have travelled between languages, and examine issues of
translation and transculturation through the conditions under which
these terms have functioned and have been expected to function.
Inspired by the methodologies and findings in Words in Motion: Toward a
Global Lexicon (edited by Carol Gluck and Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, Duke
University Press, 2009), and by recent research on the constructions of
art historical discourses in the cultures of East Asia, this panel
assumes the position that the conditions under which concepts - such as
period and style - came to be deployed in the studies of art in East
Asia are neither neutral nor homogenous. Rather, we want to explore the
means and processes through which words have been used and received.
While studies on the discursive formations of the discipline of art
history have given us invaluable insights into its social and political
interventions, this panel seeks to present papers focusing on a single
term that served (or could not serve) as a building block to realise
them. Investigations of terms translated between East Asian languages,
and of those of European origins that have been brought into East Asian
contexts and vice versa, would all be considered. The panel welcomes
also critical analyses of mistranslation or of failed attempts that
illuminate unscripted backs and forths.
