PhD Position in Database Systems, Denmark

The Department of Computer Science of the University of Copenhagen (DIKU) seeks applications for a PhD position in database systems with Associate Professor Marcos Vaz Salles as primary advisor.

The position is associated to the Future Cropping partnership supported by the Innovation Fund Denmark. The partnership aims at developing new technologies to support precision agriculture in Danish farms. Of particular interest is the development of a platform to store, query, and analyze data that is geospatial in nature, coming from sources such as farm equipment, weather services, satellites, and background maps. Other than supporting the joint work on the data platform with collaborators from Aarhus University (http://www.au.dk/en/) and SEGES P/S (https://www.seges.dk/en), the PhD project will have a special focus on developing the concept of actor database systems, a new abstraction for scalable and interactive data-intensive applications. For the latter, the successful candidate will build on work currently being carried out, including contributing to an in-memory database virtualization layer.

The candidate must have a master’s degree in computer science. Preference will be given to candidates who have written their thesis in database systems. Knowledge of C++, Java, and SQL or a strong willingness to learn is required.

The start date of the employment is expected to be 1 February 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
